Art in Primary Schools – Units
The art of Don Binney (New Zealand artist, b. 1940)
Levels:
Y3-8
The Visual Arts in the
New Zealand
Curriculum:
Developing practical knowledge in the visual arts & Developing ideas in the visual arts, Levels 2-5. Included in the extended unit: Communicating and interpreting in the visual arts & Understanding the visual arts in context, Levels 2-5.
This unit is available in two formats, a single condensed 1 ˝ hr session, or an extended four session block (each session 1 ˝ hrs).
Unit summary
Students are given a brief introduction to Don Binney and his paintings of
New Zealand
birds. This is followed by a discussion and demonstration on how artists develop an idea, starting with a realistic study of a NZ bird and turning it into a stylized representation of that same bird. Students then have the opportunity to ‘get inside the artistic mind of Don Binney’ and create their own Binney-style painting of a NZ bird (with a simplified background), starting with realistic pencil drawings, and culminating in a painting. Drawing and acrylic painting tips are given throughout the session.
Materials to be provided by the class: acrylic paint, wet strength painting paper, fine brushes, pencils, rubbers, drawing paper.
Resources provided during the session by Kea Creations Educational Resources: images of Don Binney’s paintings, photos of native NZ birds.
Cost: $1.50/student per 1.5hr session
